Evaluation Part 4

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Evaluation Part 3

What have you learned from getting audience feedback?

I think getting feedback from my audience was very helpful, as the people that I got feedback from were my initial target audience. This therefore gave me an onsite on what this age group and gender would be interested in seeing within a magazine. After receiving feedback on all of my media products, it helped me challenge my thoughts and develop and experiment more with the different ideas I had. By receiving audience feedback, it gave me a lot more ideas as well as challenging aspects of my work. I had to make sure all conventions that I used appealed to my target audience and worked well within my product. Audience feedback is important as it gives you the chance to find out what your audience wants and expects. A lot of my audience feedback was helpful and helped me improve my products, however some of the feedback were ideas that I did not want to act upon. I decided not to act on some of the suggestions because I either didn't agree with it or I tried it and it didn't meet my expectations. After receiving and acting upon my audience feedback, I have learnt that my products reflect from their interests and what my target audience expect to see in a regional fashion magazine. I made sure to use conventions and texts that would make my target audience want to carry on reading, and find out about my other products. Over all I have learnt that receiving audience feedback is very important and useful as it gives you ideas about what your chosen target audience are interested in and also gives you new thoughts on how you can challenge typical genre conventions to make my products more appealing to my audience.

These are some reader profiles that I created to show my initial target audience and the things that they are interested in and what they do for a living. This gave me more of an incite into the kind of theme I would be using on my products for them to appeal to specific audience. I chose to do a reader profile on teenaged females who are into fashion and keeping up with the latest trends. By doing this, I know that these people are who I would want to be attracted to my products. This therefore helped me with a colour scheme and what magazines to get my inspiration from. From this information, I put together a montage of photos which portray my target audience, as the are all things that would appeal to them. Therefore these are the kind of things that I would include in my products.
To be able to understand my audience's need further, I arranged an interview with two teenaged females, who would fit within my target audience. I used questions that would help me justify what they look for in a fashion magazine, as well as which high street shops they buy clothes from and the prices they look for, for both magazines and clothes. By doing this video it helped me a lot with what to use within my products and how to make sure that my target audience will be attracted it.

After I mostly completed all of my products, I got feedback from my class. This was very helpful as most people I got feedback from were in my target audience range group. Some of the suggestions I took on board as I thought they improved my work and became more appealing to my target audience. Most of the good comments mentioned the use of my images, which were said to appeal to my audience a lot and they looked very professional. However some of the suggestions I got, I didn't go through with them. This was either because I didn't agree it would improve my product or I tried it and it didn't meet my expectations. Over all I think by getting a lot of audience feedback helped with how my products appeals to my audience and made me think of new ways in which I could make improvements.

These screenshots of my magazine show the version before I got audience feedback on how to improve my products and after I took some of the suggestions on board and changed some conventions. This comparison shows how much my product has improved due to audience feedback. My magazine is now a lot stronger and looks more appealing to my target audience of teenage females. All of the audience feedback and research has helped me a lot when it came to creating my products, as it gave me more of a clear incite to what my target audience want to see and read within a regional fashion magazine. I also made small improvements on my website, such as changing some of the fonts and text sizes to improve the look of my pages. Over all I think I have learned that getting audience feedback is very important and helpful when creating products with a specific target audience such as my own.

After I completed all of my products I decided to ask some of my target audience to look at them and feedback to me if they would actually buy and read my products. Every person I asked said they would which means that I have successfully used conventions of fashion magazines to be able to attract the correct audience. I was confident that I would get this result as I used the same audiences feedback to improve my products to what my target audience would want to see and what would attract them.

Evaluation Part 2

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary tasks?

All of my three products come together and create a package that in my opinion will be recognised by my target audience as throughout the creation of my products I have kept the high street fashion theme, as well as sticking to a colour scheme and choosing certain conventions. I think that my products make an effective combination as they all work well together and advertise each other which is seen regularly in real media products. I have used a good choice of specific images throughout my products which bring 'Runway' all together as one, and makes a unique stand for my group of products for distribution.

Evaluation Part 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

I have created a Prezi to show the ways my media products use, develop and challenge conventions of real media products.

Double Page Spread Update

I have slightly updated my double page spread as I thought some small elements could be improved. I made sure that the main body of text was the same distance from the bleed line on either side.  I think that doing this made my double page spread look a lot more professional and more suitable to compete with  real media products. I also made sure that there was a clear strap line at the bottom of my article page which followed the line from the issue number and masthead at the bottom. This made my page look better laid out and easier to look at as all of the columns are all in line.

Front cover update

I reevaluated my front cover and decided to add and change a few elements.  I have taken away the issue number front under the website address, as I already had it in the barcode and I didn't think I needed to display it twice. I changed 'Top 10 Celeb Trends' to 'Top 10 Northern Trends'. I thought that this would make my magazine more regional and this cover line stands out in particular as it is in a black circle which makes the text stand out even more, which means that it is noticeable to the audience that my magazine is regional. I also changed the bottom strap line to make it more regional, and I didn't think that at a first look the audience would know what 'Start your own trends' relates to. I changed this to 'Interview with The North East's favorite fashion designer' this shows the regional side of my magazine and clearly shows what the main article/interview is about within my magazine. Over all I think my magazine cover is at the highest standard it can reach and I think it looks professional enough and will compete well with real media products.

Billboard update

I decided to experiment with using pink or red for the bow that the model is wearing. I chose to do this because my main colour scheme on all of my other products is pink and my billboard was all black and white and I thought that it didn't link in enough with my other products. I chose to use a very light pink so it didn't stand out too much and take the attention off the main masthead and website address. I think this has worked effectively when considering my other products.

Contents Page Update

I have updated my contents page slightly as I was looking at my inspiration more and wanted to try adding small pieces of text under the main title of each page. I chose to make these pink to fit in with the theme of my products which works well. I think this made my page look more exciting and less dull and boring like it did before. I think the use of this convention makes my contents page look a lot more professional. Over all I think this change has made my product look a lot better and look more appealing to me and my target audience.

Contents Page Update

I have updated my contents page, as I thought the colour scheme didn't work with the rest of my pages which I have created. I have rearranged the text and made sure that each new line end at the same place so it looks tidy and professional. I have also removed the pink background as I didn't think it was necessary because of the way I changed the colour scheme around the page. Instead of the pink background, I used pink circles behind each one of the page numbers to keep the colour scheme going and to make the numbers stand out more as this is the most important feature on the page. Another thing I added is a small tag line at the bottom of the page. I  used this to put the website address in, and different ways to view Runway's social media such as Facebook, Twitter and Youtube for updates. I also made the 'Cover Lines' and 'Features' sub titles a lot smaller than what there were, as I thought they looked out of place and made the page look unprofessional. Since I have made the changes, I think my contents page looks a lot better and will appeal to my target audience a lot more.

Double Page Spread Update

I have made some small changes to my double page spread to make it look more professional and appealing to my target audience. I have changed the 'Runway' title at the bottom of the page into capital letters as this is how it is shown on my front cover, and I thought by keeping it in capitals all the time will make it more of a unique feature. I also made the website address in the last paragraph a different colour. I changed it to pink as it is a feminine colour and my target audience is young females. This also made the website address stand out a lot more against the black text, as the website will be taken on board by my audience as they may want to find out more information about the specific article/fashion designer. I have also added in 'Sunderland's Finest Fashion Designer' at the top of the page, underneath the main title of the article. I made this text a dark pink as I didn't want it to look out of place, but I wanted to add in a bit more colour to the page. This also keeps the magazine looking regional as it mentions the region of Sunderland, showing that the article is based about someone from the area. Over all I think after doing these slight changes, my double page spread looks a lot stronger and more appealing.

Front Cover update

I have made changes to my front cover after getting more feedback, and getting ideas on how to improve my product. I have created a small black banner in the top right corner, which I put the price and month of issue on. I think this makes the text a lot more eye catching as the price is one of the main parts looked at by an audience. This also looks more interesting than just having the text in the corner. I also added the issue number under the masthead and the website address. I put this here as I thought this is one of the most important bits of information for the audience to read, as they need to be notified about which issue number that they are up to. I also added in more colour, by adding in red parts of text throughout the page. I changed the number '10' red, and also 'High Street Beauty'. I also changed 'Top 10' to a different shade of pink. I think the colour changes has been really effective as the front cover now looks a lot more eye catching as it has more variety. I also added in a circle underneath 'Top 10 celeb trends' to make the text stand out more as it blended in a bit with the background image. Over all I think the changes that I have made have been effective and made my front cover look a lot more professional and eye catching to my target audience.

Website - Homepage (update)

I have changed the font types in the text section of the main gallery. I have made the titles in a more flowing font, which represents the genre of fashion a lot better. I have also made all of the text bigger, as it didn't look clear enough, and now it is a lot more eye catching for the users. The text choice for the body text was quite boring so I changed it to a font that isn't usually seen on websites, but it is still clear and understandable.

Website - Fashion page (update)

I have added in a reminder to the user that they can subscribe to the magazine, and not miss another issue. On my website, this can be done on the contact page but this is not clear to the user, therefore I have inserted a link into the information text that will take the user straight to the contact page. This will show them right to the correct page to be able to subscribe if that is what they are looking to do. I think this is beneficial for all ages as it makes it more understandable and more user friendly.

Font Cover Update

I have slightly updated my front cover, taking note of the feedback I received. I have moved the website address to below to masthead to make more room for my main pug at the bottom of the page. This text was said to not stand out enough so I tried different coloured boxes underneath it, and I decided on pink as it goes with my house style and most of the other text on my front cover. This made the text stand out a lot more than it did, as this is the main text advertising the main article inside, it needs to be eye catching and draw in attention.

Double page spread update

I have updated the left hand page of my double page spread. In my peer feedback, it was mentioned that the pull quote didn't stand out enough. I tried making it a different colour but no other colors worked with the background image. I think tried adding in a box behind the text, but I used a gradient  effect which made the black fade up from the bottom, which made the text stand out a lot more. I also moved the text into two lines, instead of one which meant I could make the text a lot larger. I also moved the text so it was central instead of to the left. Over all I think this piece of text looks a lot more eye catching and stands out from the strong background image.

Website - Fashion Page Updated

I have added in text to my fashion page, to create small articles about celebrities and their fashion. I put the text directly opposite the image used as I thought this was the most efficient way of setting it out. I also liked the idea of using big speech marks around the text, instead of using a box to make it look in place. I also added in an Accordion styled photo gallery. I used the same model in each photograph as I decided to use it to show a model of the year from the company of my products. I like the effect of this gallery as the photographs widen when the mouse is hovered over, so the user can see the full photograph. I think all of the conventions that I have added in are media rich and will appeal to my target audience of young females, who are interested in high street fashion.

In todays lesson I will be taking into consideration all of the peer feedback that I got, and I will try to make slight changes to my products from what has been suggested.

Class Feedback on my products

This is the feedback which I got from my class, commenting on my magazine front cover, contents page, double page spread, billboard and my magazine. I think that getting peer feedback helps with the quality of my work, as it is being viewed by who would be my target audience, and they can suggest things that would make my products more appealing to them. I have took into consideration all of the things that could be improved on all of my products and I will try and get them up to my target audiences expectations. Overall all of the feedback I got was mostly positive feedback, and backing up what I have already created for my products. Most people commenting saying they liked my theme colour that runs throughout all of my products and that my choice of images is good, but I could have a bit more variety of conventions on my website. I will take all of this structure into consideration and try to change some aspects of my products.

Double Page Spread - Credits

I added in a section of text in the gutter which included the credits of the Photography, Hair/Makeup and the model. Readers may want this information to either find out more about the photography work if it is appealing to them and the same with the hair/make up. Also the name of the model may be wanted by the target audience as they may want to see more photographs of this model and look into different things that they have done.

Magazine Update - Contact Page

This is m contact page on my website. I have kept the same colour theme and elegant look. I used the same shape around the title which I have on each page. I have also kept everything very central as I think it looks more professional and easier on the eye. I included the address of Runway Boutique and the phone number for people who want to get in touch that way. I also included a way to subscribe to Runway magazine at the bottom of the page. The customer will need to type in their name, email, phone number, and address, to then this sends to the company and notifies them that someone wants to subscribe, and then contacts them to get further details. I have kept it very easy to read with the black on white text and a big bold black box which the important information is in, stating how you can subscribe. I think this page is very strong as to what it is used for considering both the layout and content.

Website Update - Fashion Page

I have updated the Fashion Page on my website. I have added in 'The Best of Spring Fashion' section, including two photographs which were taken on location, which shows the spring setting. I also put text next to it, giving information explaining further into what the relevance of the section is. I added this in as I thought it would appeal to my target audience, and that it is something that they would like to read. I also added in 'Stooshe's North East Live Wardrobe', 'Jessie J shows figure off atWarwick Castle', and Little Mix's Leigh-Anne Rocks high waist mom jeans'. I think all of these headline state my genre of high street fashion, which will result in these sections really appealing to my target audience. All of these sections show celebrities wearing high street popular clothing, and because they are celebrities, it refers to Katz and Lazerfeld's theory of the Two Step Flow theory. This is because by using celebrities in magazines, means that the celebrities chosen need to be idolized by the chosen target audience, which in my case works very well. As my target audience are interested in both popular fashion and celebrities who wear that kind of clothing, which tells them that, that type of clothing is whats in at the minute. I also added in a short slide show of photographs of models wearing high street clothing. I also added in captions, pointing out the main point of why the specific image is there, for example, some are for the accessories and others are for the jacket the model is wearing. I think this is a good way to present different photographs, and keep the audience entertained with the fade effect.

Double Page Spread Update

                Before Changes

I have made slight changes to my chosen double page spread. I decided to choose this design over the other, as I thought that there was too much white space on the right hand page near the colorful photograph. I chose to use this one as there is no space and everything fits well together. The first change I made was changing the colour of the mast head, it was pink but it didn't blend in with anything else on either page, therefore I changed it to a pale yellow, which related to the models yellow dress behind the text in my article. I also moved the 'new year new me' text over to the left slightly as it looked too far pushed to the right hand side and the text also looked too stretched. I also added some small text at the bottom of the right hand page stating the issue number and the name of the magazine. I think these changes have made my double page spread a lot stronger, and it looks a lot more appealing to me and hopefully my target audience of young females.

Website Update - Home Page

I have added in two advertisements for competitions. The items which are to be won are things that will appeal to my target audience, such as popular events and music events. I also added in a panorama photograph of The Quayside, which points out the regional idea of my products. Also the events are in the regional area which the competitions refer to. I kept the fonts very simple and black, this makes them clear and readable on the white background. I also used images with the competitions to draw more attention, that what it would if it was just a paragraph of text informing the reader.
I also included images in a polaroid effect which I think stands out and looks different. I also used small sub titles in the larger white part at the bottom, which feature different options of fashion information, which my target audience would be interested in.

Website Homepage

This is my home page of my website so far. This website reflects from my magazine and includes elements from it. I have used a lot of photographs defining my genre of high street fashion, and these images will therefore appeal to my target audience of young females. The images at the top of the page enlarge when they are clicked on so the audience can get a better look at the model and their clothing. I also included a Facebook like bar and the same emblem logo from my magazine front cover.
At the bottom of the page I have used images focusing on both the fashion and makeup that the model is wearing. The text under these images is mostly chances to win different things to do with fashion such as winning a photo-shoot and winning a pair of sunglasses. This will appeal to my audience as these are things that young females interested in fashion would want.

Billboard draft

This is a draft of my billboard, which will be used to promote my other products. I kept the same font, which I have used in the magazine which gives my products its uniqueness. I also included the website address, as audiences will see the billboard then may want to find out more, which they will get that information on the website, which will then inform them that a magazine is also available. The black and white is very strong, and theres a lot of contrast in the image which is used. The location of the shot also makes the image a lot more interesting rather than it being on a plain white background.

Contents page draft

This is my draft version of my contents page. I kept with the colour scheme of shades of pink, to keep the feminine feel, which appeals to my target audience, of young females. I also used big clear text to show the titles of the pages, so they can clearly be read, along side the numbers of the pages in bold so they stand out. I also included the website address at the bottom of the page, to give the audience a chance to find out more about my products. I also think the image works well on this page as its to the far left, where the text just fits around the shape of the models pose to the right hand side.

Double page spread drafts

I have created two different layouts to my double page spread. It is an interview with a new fashion designer. The model is also features on the front page, showing that the main article is about them. Both of these double page spreads are strong, and are clear to read by all of my target audience. I think that the first one looks like it has a lot more writing on it, which may put the audience off, unlike the second option, where the text is all spread out and put on a different coloured background which makes it stand out even more. Also the coloured image used is a lot more clear on the second version as it isn't faded into the background like the first one.
